Fundació ACE extends FACEHBI, its study

on subjective memory complaints for three years

.

  • The extension is due to the revealing results of the study, which measures the relationship between memory complaints and the risk of dementia.
  • The FACEHBI study wants to establish indicators of early detection of Alzheimer’s that may influence the development of the disease.
  • The prestigious journal The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease has echoed this novel study to non-ill people.

Fundación ACE will extend the FACEHBI study three years more, an investigation that aims to measure the reliability of subjective memory complaints in relation to the development of dementia or Alzheimer’s. With this initiative, which was launched in December 2014, Fundación ACE emphasizes the early diagnosis of the physiological changes that occur in the disease in order to be able to develop drugs that affect the early stages of Alzheimer’s.

For this study, which has been echoed by the prestigious French journal JPAD (The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease), the ACE Foundation monitors 200 people, whose clinical results are normal but show symptoms of loss by heart. The follow-up, which lasts for at least three more years, is based on medical and neuropsychological tests that observe the evolution of these people to detect possible symptoms of dementia and establish indicators that relate these initial memory complaints with the onset of the disease .

Early detection of Alzheimer’s, a priority

For the FACEHBI study, the ACE Foundation is based on a previous study, carried out by German scientists, that focused on the role of people who, despite obtaining normal results in medical tests, are aware of suffering Some kind of memory loss. According to the study itself, this profile of people ends up suffering some kind of dementia after a short period of time.

It should be noted that not all people with Alzheimer’s are able to detect it beforehand and that, on the other hand, not all people who complain that they lose memory eventually develop the disease. Some causes such as stress, anxiety or depression can result in these minor memory losses that are not necessarily linked to dementia.

Conscious of the fundamental role that early detection of this disease can have in influencing it as far in advance as possible, the ACE Foundation will carry out this research in the next three years with the support of other entities such as Grífols, Araclon and Pyramal.

Alzheimer’s Night

Fundación ACE, in collaboration with the Fundación Castell de Peralada, promotes Alzheimer’s Night, an annual meeting with research, treatment and prevention of the disease, which will take place at Peralada Castle on Friday, 28th July.

This will be the second edition of the solidarity event that aims to raise awareness about the need to invest in research and promote fundraising for this purpose. This year the contributions of assistants and sponsors will go to the creation of the first Unit of Prevention and Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Foundation ACE, in which the FACEHBI project is integrated.
