Dr. Silvia Gil Navarro, neurologist at Fundació ACE, participated yesterday at the University of La Laguna in the II AFATE Conference that took place on October 15th-18th in Tenerife. The conference, organized annually by the Association of relatives and caregivers of Alzheimer's patients and other dementias of Tenerife (AFATE), has focused this year on the current state of research on dementias, as well as on the ethical issues on therapeutic attention for people who suffer from any of these diseases.
Gil Navarro spoke in her lecture about the Sitges Document which deals with the protection of the rights of people with dementia from the legal, medical and social perspectives. The document encourages the application of tailor made solutions for each patient, with the aim of preserving their autonomy and decision-making capacity as long as possible, preventing total disability as the only solution.
The last update of the document was carried out in 2009 by a group of experts from the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), among which there is Dr. Mercè Boada, medical director of Fundació ACE.
