Beauty and the Beast: the year’s fairytale for a dance night

Beauty and the Beast: the year’s fairytale for a dance night

All the ingredients are in place, to serve up a fairytale night at the Castell de Peralada Festival. Coming to the festival is the Beauty and the Beast performance that will carry the viewer off to the world of the fairytale, the world of fantasy and imagination, a place where everything is possible and where love can emerge between a beautiful young woman and an apparently ferocious beast.
In the wake of a total success on different stages around Europe, for the first time ever, French choreographer Thierry Malandain will be bringing to Catalonia his own particular reading of Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s tale (1740), popularised by the abbreviated version by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont (1756).
Malandain has captivated both audiences and critics with this show that combines an apparently simple staging with live music based on a Tchaikovsky score and performed by the Basque Symphony Orchestra. An original performance with a great deal of symbolism and a wardrobe that blends classicism with the avant-garde, wonderfully delicate virtuoso movement to the service of an evocative choreography.
The premiere at the Festival Castell de Peralada will be the only performance in Catalonia this summer. This work, along with the later meet & greet with the artists, is what Castell de Peralada offers to those attending the Alzheimer’s Night, next July 28th.
