Alois Alzheimer's birth

.

Aloysius "Alois" Alzheimer was born in Marktbreit on June 14, 1864. He studied medicine at the University of Berlin, where he obtained his doctorate in 1987. The following year he began his professional career in a mental hospital in Frankfurt, although he would be in the Psychiatric Hospital Of Munich, where he could develop the most recognized part of his work. There he met the neurologist Franz Nissl (1860-1919), whose method used Alzheimer's for much of his work on brain pathology.

On November 4, 1906, during the 37th Conference of Psychiatry in South-East Germany presented the communication "On a Specific Disease of the Cerebral Cortex" (Alzheimer's Disease and Immunization Schweren Erkrankungprozeb der Hirnrinde, Allegemeine Seitschrift für Psychiatrie a Psychisch-Gerichtliche Medizin. 1907; 64: 146-148). This was the first publication that identified the symptoms of the disease we now know as Alzheimer's. He had observed in the patients symptoms such as loss of memory, disorientation, hallucinations, etc. And it was in the postmortem analysis of brains, which found accumulated plaques of an anomalous substance (amyloid) and accumulations of fibrous matter in neurons.

The neurologist had observed post mortem in the brains of two patients he had visited and reflected them in the publication that put the body of the discovery of this new disease. Alzheimer died at age 51 of a heart attack on December 19, 1915. Since then, advances in what has been called the forgetfulness disease have increased dramatically, although there is still a long way to go to find out what causes the disease And, if possible, how to cure it.
