Today, November 25, marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Day Center of the Fundació ACE. It was the first specific center to treat Alzheimer's disease in Spain. Neurologist Mercè Boada, Creu de Sant Jordi 2016, and psychologist Lluís Tárraga founded it under the name Alzheimer Educational Center (ACE). The hypothesis was that it was possible to re-educate people with Alzheimer's disease to maintain their capabilities as much as possible.
25 years later, the Integral Psychostimulation Program is still the method that the Center's professionals apply to patients. It has been published in prestigious magazines in the sector as the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, for example. This program demonstrates that cognitive impairment goes through several phases in which non-pharmacological intervention is possible based on psychostimulation and memory exercises to help preserve it.
A structure dedicated to Alzheimer's
Fundació ACE, which was created five years later, has generated three more units to treat Alzheimer's and other dementias. Among them, the Research Unit, which has participated in the discovery of 12 genes related to the disease. The Diagnostic Unit, which in 20 years has diagnosed more than 20,000 people, and the Daycare Hospital, the only center to treat early Alzheimer's, that is, people under 65 years.
