Facememory®, the tool that detects if you have memory disorders
There is a moment that is repeated every year when we return from holidays. We arrive at the office the first day, turn on the computer, we want to enter the email and… surprise! What was the password?
Some people will remember it in a few seconds, others will have to resort to the notebook or file where they have written down all their passwords.
This simple example helps us to highlight a reality: memory loss is not exclusively linked to age or to a disease such as Alzheimer's. It depends on many factors.
Cognitive impairment: possible causes
Cognitive impairment can have some causes and occur at different stages of our life. Furthermore, it can be temporary or irreversible.
Stress, anxiety or depression, for example, can cause unusual transitory forgetfulness or that our memory fails us when it comes to retrieving some information. In the most serious cases, such as a stroke, memory impairment can make daily life difficult and can become irreversible.
On the other hand, memory disorders can be related to the passage of time and aging. Of course, dementia and Alzheimer's also cause cognitive impairment.
To detect the causes of cognitive impairment, doctors and neuropsychologists have different tools at their disposal:
- Consult the medical history.
- Perform a physical examination.
- Perform a neuropsychological assessment to assess cognitive functions (memory, language, etc.).
- Complementary tests such as brain MRI, CT scan, or blood test.
Facememory®: the online test for the early detection of Alzheimer's
One of the causes related to cognitive impairment is Alzheimer's. It is a dementia for which, at the moment, there is no cure. However, years of study and research leave us with a clear conclusion: the importance of early detection of Alzheimer's to delay its onset or to improve the health of a person with this diagnosis.
In this context, at Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona we have developed Facememory®, an online test that allows detecting cognitive deterioration in people, mainly with memory loss, allowing the early detection of Alzheimer's.
In addition to discovering this disease in advance in order to help alleviate its symptoms and initiate effective treatment, with Facememory® we seek:
- Encourage screening to refer those who show poor performance in this test to a specialized unit.
- Value the importance of reviewing the state of our memory every certain period of time. Why not make recognition of our memory as an indicator of health, just like weight, cholesterol or sugar?
- Make memory tests accessible, making it easier for anyone to evaluate their memory with Facememory®, without having to go to the medical center.
In short, with Facememory® we have set ourselves the goal of promoting the early detection of memory problems in an easy, fast and comfortable way. To achieve this, the test has been designed by a team of experts in cognition, with more than 25 years of experience in the memory checks of people from the age of 50.
How does Facememory® work?
Facememory is the first self-administered speech recognition episodic memory test. That is, anyone can do it without the help of a healthcare professional.
To carry out this online test for the early detection of Alzheimer's we need:
- A computer or digital tablet
- Internet connection
- Access to the Facememory® test
The test does not require any prior preparation. Three days after taking the test, you will receive an email indicating if your memory is cognitively healthy or the results have not been as expected. In this second case, we will invite you to make a face-to-face visit or by videoconference with us to make a more exhaustive diagnosis.
The health of your memory, in expert hands
Once the Facememory® test has been carried out, the web automatically records the data through a medical database and the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona neuropsychology team analyses them in order to offer a personalized response and guide people who are detected underperforming cognitive.
To date, 996 people have evaluated their memory online with our application, of which 857 have shown to have a relatively preserved result and 139 have been detected with memory impairment.
In the words of Dr. Montse Alegret, head of Ace's neuropsychology unit: “Facememory is a scientifically validated screening tool for the detection of the first symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. The fact that, through their computer or tablet, everyone can check their memory is a step forward, especially at the present time, to be able to detect the first signs of the disease and be able to act in its progression and enhance the health".
Facememory is an opportunity
An opportunity to give value to the importance of caring for people's memory through medical reviews carried out by experts. We are therefore facing an opportunity to, in a comfortable, agile and simple way, detect people with cognitive impairment and, later, discover the causes of it: stress, anxiety... or perhaps an incipient memory loss caused by the Alzheimer's.
Take care of your memory, you need it in your day to day life and, thanks to it, you treasure moments and experiences to remember!
