Facememory®: Science and Innovation for Detecting Cognitive Decline

Imagine being able to assess your memory from the comfort of your own home without needing to visit any medical facility. With Facememory®, that is possible.

Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of dementia worldwide and the major cause of disability among older adults in our country. However, according to the Spanish Society of Neurology, there may be between 30-40% of undiagnosed cases. Faced with this reality, the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona has created an online test to quickly and easily detect cognitive decline.

The tool revolutionizing cognitive decline diagnosis

Facememory® is an effective, easy-to-use, and accessible tool, as it allows anyone to administer a test to review memory and detect cognitive decline. This tool enables memory evaluation from anywhere, without the need to leave home or visit a medical center.

Thanks to the combination of science and technology, a team of neuropsychologists and computer scientists managed to create this tool after years of work. Montse Alegret, responsible for neuropsychology at the Diagnosis Unit of the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona, states that the achievement of this tool is that "by being able to offer it in Spanish, Catalan, and English to people who are anywhere in the world, we can detect those who have signs of cognitive decline without the need to go to the doctor to assess it."

It is a scientifically validated test thanks to the study, evaluation, and research work on response reliability carried out by the Ace neuropsychology team. The data collected through Facememory® allows our neuropsychology team to continue studying memory and the onset processes of dementia.

A pioneering tool with encouraging results

Facememory® has proven to be as effective as in-person neuropsychological tests. These data make it a promising tool for detecting memory deficits related to Alzheimer's disease, but also for detecting cases of memory impairment due to other causes.

Advantages of the tool

You only need three utilities to take this test: a computer or tablet, internet connection, and access to the test from our website. Our goal was to create a test that is easy to use and reliable at all times. In addition to this, it is:

Very easy to do: it consists of a series of face association tests for which you do not need to prepare.

Does not require hours of dedication: completing the test will take you only between 30 and 40 minutes.

You do not need the help of an expert or someone to accompany you to do it: it is a test that we can (and should) do alone, without the need for a family member or a specialist doctor to help us. Just follow the step-by-step instructions given by a voice throughout the test.

Comfortable to do: being an online tool, Facememory® does not require you to travel to a medical consultation to do it. You can start it from the comfort of your home, sitting in a chair or on the sofa, in bed, or wherever you feel most comfortable. Simply choose a place where there is no noise and where you can be calm.

It is sufficient to do it once a year: there are medical tests that need to be done quite frequently. In this case, completing Facememory® once a year is recommended to periodically review your memory and take care of it, knowing its current state and if there are any signs of cognitive decline.

It is a high-quality screening test: your results are not analyzed by an algorithm but are reviewed by the Ace neuropsychology team.

The first 3,000 participants: a revealing analysis

These data are collected from the paper "FACEmemory®, an Innovative Online Platform for Episodic Memory Pre-Screening: Findings from the First 3,000 Participants". After analyzing the data from the first 3,000 participants in the test, it is observed that they had an average age of 50 years, 13 years of schooling, 64% were women, and 82% reported having concerns related to memory.

This analysis indicates that age, schooling, sex, country, and medical history are factors that influence Facememory® scores. Those with fewer years of schooling and a higher prevalence of conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, as well as family history of neurodegenerative diseases, showed greater impairment in the test.

An advance in Alzheimer's diagnosis and awareness

Facememory® not only stands out for its ability to assess memory but also for its role in raising awareness about cognitive decline. In a world where Alzheimer's represents such a significant health challenge, early detection is key to better medical care.

The test has proven effective in differentiating between cognitively healthy individuals and those with Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI), a state of elevated risk for conversion to dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease.

With Facememory®, the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona takes a step forward in early Alzheimer's detection, offering a promising tool for evaluating and raising awareness about cognitive decline.
