Fundació ACE publishes the largest number of papers of its history during the pandemic

At Fundació ACE we are fortunate to have an entrepreneurial, resilient professional team that is expert in neurodegenerative diseases. A rigorous, quality and excellent work that has led us to achieve another landmark in 2020.

During the pandemic, our research team has published 41 articles that bring different advances in the knowledge of dementias and Alzheimer's. It represents 52% more articles compared to 2019, thus achieving the historical record of publications of Fundació ACE.

In addition to the volume of papers, the quality of these stands out, which in 2020 have reached an impact factor of 233.47.

According to Agustín Ruiz, Research Director of Fundació ACE, “without a doubt, 2020 has been a special year. The pandemic has forced us to rethink a substantial number of scientific activities. I must say that the better use of telematic tools has brought together, even more and better, the Fundació ACE Research teams, and some of these changes has come to stay. As the activity of congresses and face-to-face meetings declined, there was more time to work on the scientific manuscripts and re-analyze the available data. This will have an impact that will be seen during the next years”.

Ruiz does a “very positive balance of the year, I am especially satisfied with the results.” And he summarizes the progress achieved during 2020: “We have published multiple advances in all our programs. From clinical research we contribute with important works in the evaluation of ophthalmological markers to evaluate dementia. Research programs in medical psychology developed new paradigms of cognitive evaluation, and in the field of genomics, we have managed to identify a genetic factor that protects against the effect of APOE. We were also particularly proactive in analysing the impact of the pandemic on our memory clinic."

Collaboration with different entities

This landmark highlights the prestige of Fundació ACE in the field of dementias and Alzheimer's, since many of the papers published have been worked on in collaboration with other renowned Spanish and international entities, as well as many of them have been the result of the collaboration with consortia and research centres, such as CIBERNED (Centre for Networked Biomedical Research on Neurodegenerative Diseases), IGAP Consortium, European Alzheimer's Disease Consortium or International Frontotemporal Dementia Genetics Consortium, among others.

A year of intense research

The year 2020 will be remembered as one of the saddest and most uncertain periods in recent history. In a pandemic situation, how could it be otherwise, medicine and research have been essential to combat, prevent and cure Covid-19.

We can affirm that 2020 has been the year of biomedical science, in every way, also in the field of dementias. From Fundació ACE we have made an effort so that Alzheimer's research is not paralyzed by Covid-19, as has happened in other areas.

That is why, despite the difficulties in adapting to a new reality and teleworking, our team of researchers has overcome once again, achieving that this 2020 is also remembered for the advances in the knowledge, diagnosis and treatment of dementias.
